How a $100 Gift and “Short” Timeshare Presentation Quickly Became an Endless Headache for Mary H. & Her Husband

Mary was tackling personal health challenges when she and her husband were coerced into purchasing a timeshare during a seemingly normal vacation. This vacation was meant to ease their minds from the everyday stresses battling Mary’s health issues, but it quickly led to an even bigger problem after being pressured into a timeshare sale.

What started as a stroll down the street on vacation quickly turned into a never-ending source of stress for Mary and her husband. 

“We were walking down the street and a man asked us to go to a timeshare meeting. In return for attending the meeting, we would be given $100. Once we got there, we spoke to a salesman who showed us some of the resort.”

This tour dragged on much longer than the 90 minutes the couple was originally told. Mary and her husband were even pitched by multiple salespeople before they were ultimately pressured into buying a timeshare. 

“We told them that we could not afford it, and so another salesperson came in and kept on badgering us until we said yes. [They] told us what a great investment it was, that we could rent it out, make money on it, and even trade it out to stay at other [properties]. They failed to tell us that we could only use it the first three weeks of January every other year, or we would not be in this mess.” 

As Mary’s health issues developed, she knew that the timeshare costs were adding up while the time spent at the timeshare was not. She knew that money would be better spent on tending to her personal health issues as well as taking care of her family. 

“I have had health issues and could use the money for medical bills and medicines that are purchased monthly. It is money that could [also] be used to help my family: my elderly mother, children, and grandchildren.”
