Trisha and Fred were tricked into multiple timeshares after they were offered incentives to sit and listen to timeshare presentations. For Trisha and Fred, vacations became a necessity. Both had served over 20 years in the United States Navy. With retirement on their horizon now, vacations were a great way for the couple to relax and reset. That is until one day they were offered a few incentives to attend a timeshare sales meeting.
“I remember Visa gift cards and food vouchers were offered to us if we just sat through a presentation. We were then given a tour of the facilities. We were also given breakfast. Afterward, we were given the presentation by one person. We initially declined the offer, and the person left and returned with another person. They wrote down a bunch of numbers and began to ask us how important a vacation every year was. Again, we declined and they came back with yet another person. This continued for several hours. The meeting must have lasted at least three hours.”
Feeling like everything happened all too fast, Trisha and Fred found themselves stranded in timeshare agreements that seemingly had no end in sight. After only a few months they started to examine all of the issues they had with their timeshares.
“One of the bigger problems we had was the inability to book dates and places we wanted due to resorts being full. We were also not offered alternatives by the timeshare people. We had to move rooms on one occasion due to no water in the unit. We were also locked out of a room on another occasion due to their error in booking dates.”
Left with nothing but heartbreak over this so-called vacation dream, Trisha and Fred became upset when they realized all the information that was conveniently left out of their sales meeting.
“This is absolutely a financial hardship on us as we grow nearer to retirement. Not to mention, that after our death an even greater burden will arise when our children have to take on these timeshares. No one in this company told us of the financial obligation this would be on our kids once we die. To have it gone/cancelled would be a great emotional and financial relief, especially regarding our children.”
